It is now legal in every non-Muslim country in the world EXCEPT the USA. In the late 1890's it was so popular in France that people were making it at home. Unskilled people making any liquor can be a problem, and this, combined with wine industry efforts to win back market share by aggressive lobbying, led to the absinthe ban.
